How To Bake Bacon & All Kinds of Ways to Cook Bacon

Crispy delicious bacon. That aroma of smokey bacon goodness. You know the aroma – the one that will wake you from your slumber in the morning when you smell it. That smell that floats through the air that leads you in a trance to its source. That aroma that will stop a conversation dead in its tracks so you can search it out. You know what I’m talking about – that mouth-watering crispy, savory, good-on-just-about-everything-you-can-think-of, bacon.

Hungry yet? Yea, me too.

If you’re like me, you’ve tried bacon just about every other way – cooked in the microwave, pan frying bacon, cooking it on a flat-top grill, your George Forman grill – the list goes on. There are a ton of great ways to cook bacon and great dishes you can create with bacon, but I digress. I’ve got more on those things below.

If you’re looking for the straight-up best way to cook up some delicious, yummy, crispy, savory bacon then you’re in the right place. No splatter burns, and no cosmic microwave radiation that you’re worried about will cause you or your children to grow a third eyeball.

You don’t have to stand over it and watch it, turning it and burning yourself with the grease. You don’t have to worry if it will taste like rubber. This method will make bacon that will come out perfectly every time and have you singing out loud of your love for bacon. If you’ve got an oven and a timer you’ve got all you need to cook it up right. Without a doubt, this is the best way to make great bacon.

Your spouse will love you for it, your kids will beg you for it, your friends will want to know where you learned how to cook it this way, your mom just might be jealous, and your grandmother may not talk to you for a while (but she’ll still eat that bacony goodness when you’re not looking). You’ll be wondering why you weren’t doing it this way all along.

Ready? Let’s go.

Crispy and Delicious Bacon

First things first. Get yourself a good cut of bacon. I’m a big fan of the thick cut. It makes the crispy, crispier and just overall better especially when you’re putting it on a cheeseburger. But either way, get yourself a good cut of bacon. If it’s too fatty or too lean you’re probably not going to get the most from your bacon and, well, we can’t have that. Need to run to the grocery store now? That’s fine, I’ll wait…

You back? Ok – great.

Now that you’ve got a good cut of bacon, let’s get out a sheet pan, like a cookie sheet, but one that will contain the grease from the cooked bacon. You want one big enough to cook all your bacon at once so make sure you’ve got a good sized pan.

Next you’ll want to cover that pan completely with some aluminum foil. It makes clean-up a lot easier. By the way – you can save the bacon grease to pour over your dog’s food. Your dog will adore you for this – it’s a fantastic treat.

Now if you want to level-up your game, you can go the next step and use an oven safe bacon rack. (There are whole bunch to choose from, so just find one that works for you and make sure that it’s safe for use in your oven. You don’t want to ruin your bacon with plastic melting in to it, or having a ceramic pan that will crack.) This will separate the bacon from the grease helping you get a nicer cook on the bacon.

Lay out all your lovely bacon strips on the aluminum-foil covered pan, spaced where they’re next together but not overlapping. We’re working with a single layer here folks. If you’re feeding the soccer team, then you’ll need to just scale this exercise to fit your need – you may need a few sheets, because just one pan of bacon to feed a throng of hungry kids could put you in danger!

Now that your bacon is all prepped up and ready to go, put the pan in to the oven and turn it on to 400 degrees, and then bake it for 17-20+ minutes. The important thing here is to get it cooked up to your desired doneness, and get it perfect.

Pro-tip: Bake at 400 for about ten minutes then use the broiler about five minutes, then finish off the cook by baking to your desired doneness. We like it crispy so we’ll leave ours a little longer, but you may want to just finish it in the broiler. This will speed up things just a bit so your bacon waiting is minimized.

Once you’ve got it cooked up just perfectly, carefully and lovingly pull it off the pan and place it on a plate, and you’re ready to go!
